movie review - Lady Jane

the movie Lady Jane is loosely based in the tudor period of english history when a yong girl of the age of 16 was placed on the english throne for nine days following the death of her cousin King Edward the 4th. though there was no love story between the main character and her husband Guilford Dudley the movie portrays this undying love even in the face of most certain death for the crime of high treason. all costumes in the film are tudor period going on into the early elizabethan as the movie takes place in something of a transition period when king Edward passed away, as jane ascended the throne circumventing her uncle king henry the 8ths will dictating the royal sucession. mary whom will soon become known as bloody mary is being restored by royal coup to take the throne by her supporters thus creating revolution in england and having her slide back into roman catholic church for a short time. i do believe that the costumes in this movie are characters in themselves and quite sucessful in their portrayls as they should be in period pieces such as this one. Janes costumes are all simple and in the beging of the film dark showing her love of learning yet showing her drab life to which she was ascribed. later in the film even after she is queen of england her costumes are still simple yet the colors get brighter and brighter showing her need for a brighter future for england. it isnt until she is disposed from the throne and imprisoned for treason that her costumes go back to their drab colors again showing her despair and a life wasted for someone elses political gain. as for the other characters in this film all of their costumes follow strict sumptuary law. by this jane was a noble woman but not considered royalty necessarily so her costumes were generally very simple as were her husbands Guilford Dudley however the princess Marys costumes again also known as Bloody Mary by history were very elborate as beffiting someone of her rank and station but usually dark and some form of crimson forshadowing her later role in history. her parents costumes and the lord duke northumbeland are usually black throught the course of the movie porttraying their roles as the conspirators of the plot to put jane on the throne. all in all a very good film with excellent costume characters true to history even if the written characters suffer some inadequesies along historys front.
